Well, I know that this project name is a little bit longer to you, but the main point here is to develop a voltage regulator circuit that can take a variable input voltage and produce a steady output voltage without further modification.

The two common regulator types are linear and switch-mode. The linear regulators are much simpler, but it will waste a lot of power in the process of regulating the voltage and it can be considered as self adjusting series resistors. The Switch-mode regulators are much more efficient than linear regulators, where the Switch-mode regulators can convert DC input voltages to pulses of high voltage DC. The DC pulses are frequently being used to charge a storage capacitor to the desired output voltage and the voltage is regulated by varying the width of the DC pulse constantly.

You can apply this circuit for a variety of uses; such as, it can be used to efficiently power lower voltage devices or provide power to devices that normally use a set of small batteries for power. Beside that, the circuit has also been used to power some small fans, portable radios, mini TV etc. [source]
