Yourtronics prepared a nice tutorial on how to make good quality PCB by using Photo Etching Method where board image is transferred during UV exposure. For this you will need an Ink-Jet printer for printing mask on transparent film, UV exposure box which can be made at home, several chemicals (Developer, Ferric Chloride, and Acetone).

Tutorial describes all steps needed to finish PCB including printing, UV exposing, developing, etching, and even drilling. By using Photo Etching method you will be able to develop nice PCBs for most of SMD parts. As most of electronics parts are available in SMD packages probably there is no other way than shift to this technology. Once mastered - PCB manufacturing becomes real fun.
