Glockenspiel, also known as “metal bars xylophone” is music instrument that can play with your family anytime, anywhere you want.

If you a creative person, why don’t twist your brain a little bit and renovate the Glockenspiel into “MIDI Glockenspiel”?

Materials needed:

  • Glockenspiel
  • Solenoid
  • Striker

  • LM18293 driver chip
  • Arduino

  • Perspex plate

Objective: Remove the metal from the bar to find the right tone.

Result: You get yourself a pleasant tone.

  1. First thing first, you glue the small relay with a thin wire on the moving part, and then you have to attach the striker and mount it into a frame.
  2. After it, place the Perspex plate underneath the Glockenspiel.

  1. Drill holes under each bar to fit the solenoid.

For the Arduino, we can use the LM18293 driver chip to overcome the voltage supply problem. The output pin of Arduino is only 5 volts, so a 12 volts level needed to drive the solenoid.

Lastly, remember to swap the link on Arduino, it is to allow it to be powered from external power supply. [Link]
